The Silver Creek Ranch is a highly productive commercial cattle and hay operation situated in eastern Oregon's Silver Creek Valley. The ranch enjoys paved, all-weather access to the headquarters which is located 7 miles from the store at Riley or a 32 mile drive to Burns, the Harney County seat, and approximately 110 miles west to the amenities offered in Bend. The ranch owns 2,700 acres including over 900 acres of irrigated and sub-irrigated hay meadow, pasture and pivot irrigated cropland producing both ranch hay and outside hay sales. 1,856 AUM's of summer grazing are available in private Forest Service and BLM permits. The ranch is well improved with a spacious four bedroom owner's home, a three bedroom manufactured home, a large shop facility, a calving barn, a fully equipped set of pens in new condition along with two additional shipping corrals with loading chutes placed in key locations within the ranch.
THE SILVER CREEK UNIT:
The headquarters is situated on 1,006 acres in a broad, lush valley along Silver Creek. At an elevation of 4,300 feet, 522 acres are flood-irrigated meadows of which 430 acres produce wild hay and aftermath grazing along with an additional 92 acres of irrigated pasture. 271 acres of alfalfa are irrigated by a pivot with water pumped from a proven and dependable well.
A 28 by 166 foot steel shop building offers 10 fully enclosed bays on a cement slab, all with overhead doors. 3 bays are insulated and heated and are equipped with 2 overhead hoists on tracks. Two additional three-sided bays on gravel are attached to the end of the building.
The 30 by 80 foot calving barn includes a heated vet room with a toilet, deep sink and washer/dryer hook-ups. A tack room and tie-stall are opposite the vet room. All are on a concrete slab with a floor drain next to a head-catch. A 9½ foot wide concrete alley runs the length of the building with stalls off both sides. An excellent set of lighted pens are attached to two sides of the barn.
A large processing facility offers a hydraulic squeeze chute and scales. The pens are in top condition, are well drained and located within 500 feet of the paved county road.
The owner's home is surrounded by mature shade trees within a large fenced and landscaped yard. An underground sprinkler system keeps the area cool and green through the summer. A covered porch and decking wrap around two sides of this 4 bedroom, 3½ bath country classic. A door from the heated garage leads to a centrally located office with an adjoining bathroom and laundry room providing both a comfortable and a functional environment for daily ranch management. Tile floors and countertops compliment the western kitchen while a wine cellar provides the owner and his guests with a refreshing end to another successful day on the ranch.
A 1985 Silvercrest, 3 bedroom double-wide manufactured home overlooking the meadows offers 1,323 square feet of living space with an attached carport area.
THE WILLOW SPRING UNIT:
14 miles north of the Silver Creek Ranch headquarters are 1,289 acres of deeded summer pasture adjacent to the BLM and Forest Service grazing permits utilized by the ranch. Corrals, loading chute and a stock well are situated on the deeded land at Willow Spring. Scattered stands of Ponderosa Pine and Juniper trees provide holding cover for the big game populations that thrive within the property.
THE EGYPT CREEK UNIT:
Two and one-half miles southeast of Willow Spring is the 407 acre Egypt Creek Unit. Egypt Creek flows through this beautiful mountain meadow which is perimeter fenced and surrounded by BLM lands used in conjunction with the grazing permits. A combination of 50 acres of water right and the sub-irrigating nature of the meadow produces approximately 115 acres of irrigated pasture. A new set of corrals and a loading chute accommodate gathering and shipping.
FEDERAL GRAZING PERMITS:
The ranch holds the rights to graze cattle in three allotments:
USFS Silver Creek #1756, 307 pair, June 16th to September 30th.
BLM Packsaddle #7012, 165 pair, May 1st to June 15th.
BLM Claw Creek #7010, 258 pair, April 15 to June 15th.
The ranch is entitled to grazing in the BLM Double O Allotment #7056 if any other of the ranch held BLM allotments are being rested prior to or following a prescribed burn or wildfire, if riparian objectives are not met and a rest is required, if special status plant or animal species objectives are not being met or if other management actions are being implemented to address standards for rangeland health.
RECREATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES:
The ranch is situated in an area known for its elk, deer and pronghorn antelope populations. Local herds have developed a taste for the fine dining available under the ranch pivot and the lush browse in the foothills. Ducks and Geese are abundant and Quail inhabit much of the lower elevations of the valley. The ranch has direct access to millions of acres of public lands within the Ochoco and Malheur National Forests and lands managed by the BLM. Fishing is close by at Chikahominy Reservoir. Managed by the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife as a recreational fishery, the reservoir provides an ideal habitat for growing huge trout and offers a nice boat ramp, docks and campground facilities.
SCHOOLS:
The Suntex Elementary School receives the unwavering support from the local ranching community. Located less than two miles from the Silver Creek Ranch headquarters, this friendly little country school offers kindergarten through 8th grade classes. Grades 9 through 12 are available at Burns High School where this year's 248 students benefit from a 13 students per teacher ratio. The highly rated Burns High School is the hub of activities centered on Harney County's youth and their families.
Harney County encompasses much of the Southeast corner of Oregon. It is home to numerous small communities and hamlets such as Burns, Hines, Crane, Fields, Diamond and Frenchglen. As the largest county in the state, it holds an incredible natural beauty and an enormous landscape as diverse as those that live here. Featuring world-class art and artists, unmatched wildlife, and an outstanding agricultural industry, Harney County is Oregon's Big Country.
