Located approximately one mile above the tiny community of Hereford, Oregon, Wood Gulch overlooks the irrigated hay meadows and pastures of the Burnt River Valley and offers huge mountain scenery from elevations of nearly 5,000 feet descending to under 4,200 feet. A spring fed pond at the upper end of the perimeter fenced Wood Gulch property provides year-round water for wildlife and livestock. Big game species known to frequent the area include Rocky Mountain Elk, Mule Deer, Pronghorn Antelope, Cougar and Black Bear. The majority of the 1,280 acres are heavily treed creating excellent holding cover and hunting opportunities. Wood Gulch is accessed by traveling north on the Water Gulch County Road from State Highway 245 to a gated, private road which leads to the northeast portion of the property.
The small ranching town of Unity is less than a twenty mile drive to the south. Baker City, the main service community for Baker County, is approximately forty miles to the north. Wood Gulch is within the northern portion of the Sumpter Wildlife Management Unit #51 and is eligible to apply for three landowner preference tags for all hunts permitted within the unit. Year-round fishing is waiting a short distance from Wood Gulch. The 926 acre Unity Reservoir stores as much as 25,000 acre-feet of water and offers quality recreational facilities at the Unity State Park including improved camp sites, cabins, a pleasant day use area and a paved boat ramp. Anglers catch rainbow trout, smallmouth bass and black crappie.
Wood Gulch is best described as "WILD and WOOLLY". Heavy Juniper treed thickets dominate the western portion of the property creating a canopied sanctuary for wildlife. The eastern portion supports an element of Ponderosa Pine trees on the hillsides and narrow valley bottoms. South sloping native grasslands run off rocky ridges with ancient Juniper sentinels forming a classic western foreground to the "touchable" mountain scenery beyond. This is a land left alone to the elements producing a natural beauty rarely found in today's rapidly changing west.
